As an ordained, Presbyterian minister (PCUSA), I have been in ministry for over fourteen years and have been engaged in spiritual direction for 8 years, beginning my own direction under the guidance of the Benedictine nuns of Ferdinand, Indiana. In February 2020, I finished a three-year certificate program in Spiritual Direction from Saint Meinrad’s Seminary in their continuing education studies program. This 3-year certificate allowed for extensive study and exploration of the following areas:
- Biblical and historical foundations of Christian spirituality (6 credit hours)
- Exploration of the intersection between human development and Christian maturity (3 credits)
- Exploration and engagement with Ignatian Spirituality, including developed awareness in the areas of discernment and the Spiritual Exercises (3 credits)
Completion of this certificate included a year-long practicum, including:
- Ongoing mentoring and tutelage from a licensed Spiritual Director and Supervisor for both a pre- and post-practicum
- Providing direction to three directees once/month over the course of eleven months, all while receiving monthly supervision
Spiritual Direction is – to me – at the heart of quality, Christ-like pastoral care, and it is my hope to offer this ministry to those living in West Central Indiana as a means for further growth, Christian maturity and the opportunity to address significant blockages in the life of a disciple on their way to becoming “more like Christ for the sake of others.” I believe this ministry is a gift to be given both for and to the church, but that it is also an effective means for anyone seeking to grow and explore their spiritual life.
I am also a husband to an area High School Swim Coach and swim instructor and the father of two wonderful children, both at School Putnam Middle & High School.
